Private health insurance does not usually cover dermatology health services provided outside of a private or public hospital.
Private health insurance cover is generally divided into:
- Hospital cover;
- General treatment cover; and
- Ambulance cover.
General treatment cover generally only extends to dental, optical, chiropractic, podiatry, physiotherapy, occupational, speech and eye therapy.
If you are enrolled in Medicare and visit a dermatologist outside a hospital, you may be able to claim a Medicare rebate on consultation and medical services - this applies whether or not you hold private health insurance.
